Will Florida High School Athletes Finally Gain NIL Access?

As of 2024, over half of all U.S. states have granted their high school athletes permission to take advantage of NIL deals. However, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) still remains undecided on this front and does not allow their high school athletes to monetize their name, image, and likeness (NIL)- yet, that is.

A Tampa Bay Times article published January 18th, 2024, lets us in on some developments surrounding Florida’s high school NIL decisions. As Matt Baker puts it in his article, “The conversation around name, image and likeness (NIL) deals for Florida high school athletes is heating up.” This is due to a meeting taking place today, January 19th, where Florida Legislature will hear presentations related to NIL rights for their high school athletes.

Although the topic of NIL is not listed as one of the three bills set to be deliberated in this meeting, it could be said the NIL demonstrations indicate Florida’s openness to the idea that might lead to a decision in the near future. With that being said, the question is: will Florida finally jump on the high school NIL bandwagon this year?
